Alaska Airlines Brings Innovation For Frequent Travelers!

February 21, 2023

Alaska Airlines is one of the premier airlines in the US which has a fleet size of over 200 and provides extraordinary flight services North and Central America. The airline company is among the global aviation leaders when it comes to innovation and introducing new technologies. People prefer to travel by Alaska Airlines because of its unique and lavish services with affordable rates.

Alaska Airlines: Catering to the needs of the Frequent Travelers

These days, every airline company has a mobile app. Likewise, Alaska Airlines also has its mobile app to ease the process of traveling for customers. Besides, other features in its app the airline have introduced a brand new feature which is an electronic bag tag that operates with your smart phone that moves along with your flight.

The tag is regularly updated with the flight information related to the passenger via Alaska Airlines app during check-in, so passengers can move to the bag drop area once they enter the airport and don’t have to run to get hold of the bag during connecting flights. Your destination along with other information will remain on the tag until it gets updated for the next flight, once you have checked in.

The 3-by-5-inch virtual device is made by BAGTAG a Dutch company and is supported by Near-Field Communication (NFC) from your smart phone.

According to Alaska Airlines, the time spent by the guest in airport lobbies will significantly come down “by almost 40%” with the help of this newly introduced electronic bag tag. As per GeekWire reports, the announcement of the feature was made late last year but is now started to hit the market. “Alaska still has some minor technological quirks to work out before the broader rollout,” the report added. It is also important to note that though the device is very convenient, it might not be useful to infrequent fliers, or passengers don’t usually stick to one airline.

The electronic tags also include an RFID transmitter according to GeekWire reports which said: “could ultimately make it easier for the airline to track and route bags, but that will require infrastructure upgrades at many U.S. airports.”

Innovation in 2023 by Alaska Airlines

As of now, the electronic bag tag is hard to get a hold of because Alaska Airlines has only offered it to near about 2,500 elite Mileage Plan members. According to the company, the tag will be available for purchase by all the mileage plan members very soon. You can join the notification list for more updates at your convenience.

The price of the tag is not declared yet, but in Europe and Asia where the device is also operational, its one-time cost generally varies around the $60-$70 range.

As per Alaska Airlines, for the time being, there are a few caveats for the tag. They are as follows:

  • Your smart phone is capable of Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth 4.0, like a Samsung A51 or later or iPhone 6 or later.

  • Checking through the Alaska mobile app.

  • Traveling only within the United States on Alaska Airlines and Alaska flights run by Horizon or Skywest.

  • Qualify for the fee required for automatically waived baggage. Like, as Alaska Credit Cardholder, Mileage Plan elite status, First Class Travel or Club 49.
